It’s a pleasure to write a few words about the Romani Yag Gypsy Festival which took place in Montreal, Canada. As I specialize in Romani (Gypsy) music, first of all I would like to say that, in my opinion, this festival is the best Roma festival in North America in many different ways. I have participated mostly in all Roma festivals in North America but the most pleasure I got, was at the Romani Yag festival, because there was such a warm atmosphere during these few days. Also I would like to say that this festival was very well organized by a wonderful person – the director of the festival Ljuba Radman, the board of directors and the supporting team.
I have seen and played with the best representatives of Romani music such as Taraf De Haidouks, Yuriy Yunakov, Esma Redzepova, Brothers Ferre etc… And I have met wonderful Roma musicians and speakers which the Romani Yag festival brought in this 2007 year. To say in short, the Romani Yag festival is not only a music festival: it’s an educational organization, which provides the best Roma speakers and artists to show Romani culture from all over the world, which is not much known in the West. I wish all the best and a lot of success to the Romani Yag festival and, as a Roma representative, I really hope that this festival will bring many more interesting projects in the years to come, and will become annual.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank you, your committee and all those who participated in the organizing and running of the Second Romani Yag Festival in Montreal from October 11 to 14, 2007. I and my Toronto colleagues, Lynn Hutchinson and Hedina Sijercic, were very impressed with the Festival and the events. Having helped to organized Romani events in Toronto in the past, I understand the problems involved with such massive undertakings and wish to compliment all of you on the success of this year’s event. Presentations such as Romani Yag are vitally important in order to present our Romani culture to the general public, to combat stereotyping of the Romani people and to serve as bridges between the Romani world and the non-Romani world. Please be assured that we in Toronto will work closely with you in the future in any planned events to be held in Montreal and offer what support and help we can in such presentations.

Dear Ljuba, thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Romani Yag Festival. The whole Festival’s program was more than great and all the participants were magnificent. Your work and organisation gave a spectacular colour and soul to the Festival. Thank you for bringing such talented und unique people to the Festival. I was so proud to meet all of them and I was proud to be there as a Romani woman presenting our Romani women from Bosnia, so that our women’s problems are not going to be forgotten, and I have to thank you for that. You gave me opportunity to speak aloud about this taboo theme in the Romani community. I will support your future work in organizing Romani Yag in any way you like and I would be very honoured to be again with you.

An invisible culture is one that can be mythologised and misunderstood. The great success of the Romani Yag Festival is rooted in the goals of Ljuba Radman and the festival team to tear away the curtain of myth and misrepresentation, and to provide an arena for Romani culture and ideas in Canada. RomaniYag has provided a forum for writers, educators, artists and musicians, as well as bringing lively dialogue and discussion of issues important not only to Roma but ultimately to all peoples.

En tant qu’artiste, conférencière et Sinti, je désire témoigner de la fraternité que j’ai pût vivre et constater autour de moi durant ces 4 journées intensives et mémorables que fût la seconde édition du Festival Romani Yag. La qualité professionnelle des conférences et des spectacles n’a eu d’égale que la qualité humaine des artistes et des conférenciers.
La cordialité des échanges entre les différents représentants sociaux et culturels Roma fût un bel événement en soi, une source d’espoir et d’inspiration pour le futur.
L’écoute et la bienveillance du public ont permis à la beauté des rencontres de rayonner et aux messages d’être diffusés avec intelligence, clarté et humanité.
J’ai pu voir tous ces gens, de milieux et d’origines différentes, vivre en harmonie et s’échanger des gentillesses quatre jours durant !!! Ce qui constitue, à petite échelle, un grand pas vers la construction durable de la paix, du respect et de l’amitié entre les peuples. Merci à Romani Yag pour cette grande expérience !

L’implication face à un événement qui confronte nos racines est souvent comme une rose épineuse qui fait mal à tenir de nos doigts et pourtant cette 2ième édition de Romani Yag a eu pour moi un riche parfum de solidarité sans aucun sentiment négatif, cela grâce aux gens de grande qualité qui étaient présents et qui ont oeuvré le temps de 4 jours à un monde meilleur.
C’est cette tendresse et cette joie que le spectacle Fuego Bohemio tient à partager ainsi qu’une originalité pourtant protectrice des plus belles traditions du spectacle !

Romani Yag est un croisement où se rencontrent des gens de différents pays, différents continents, qui défendent les mêmes causes, les mêmes idées, avec une volonté commune, celle que les peuples se respectent, se comprennent par-delà leurs différences, et à travers elles… Nous y avons passé un moment mémorable fait de rencontres humaines et musicales très riches. Cela nous a donné une envie, celle de revenir.

En cette édition 2007, j’en étais à ma première participation au festival. L’essentiel de ce que je retiens de ce festival, c’est la passion qui anime les gens qui le font vivre. Je trouve que la richesse et la beauté de la culture Rom transparaît complètement dans l’ambiance créée, j’ai beaucoup apprécié.
